I'm concerned that I've lost the story aspect of things. Certainly, a lot of this can be told in a good narrative way (and by 3rd or 4th grade the readership is more sophisticated) but I'm not sure what should be taking the place of the mythology and such.
I'm thinking it would be interesting to intersperse poetry and prose selections and also pieces of music go to listen to.
And, of course, each section would have recommended outside reading -- fiction and non fiction.
